Scholarship set up a year after journalist’s death

A journalism scholarship is being launched in memory of a journalist who died suddenly a year ago last month.

The Crispin Aubrey Legacy Fund has been set up by Crispin’s family a year after his death aged 66, with the aim of continuing his legacy and ensuring his values live on.

As part of this, the fund aims to provide a scholarship next year for journalism students who can demonstrate a commitment to environmental and/or investigative journalism.

After his death, Crispin’s daughters Kate, Meg and Rosie founded paperboat, an organisation which aims to enable communities to create positive change, which has now launched his legacy fund.

Crispin, who was also an anti-nuclear campaigner started his journalism career at the Hampshire Chronicle before going to work for Time Out as an investigative journalist, where he rose to national prominence in 1977 when he was arrested and later tried for exposing British and American government secrecy.

He remained a freelance journalist until his death from a heart attack in September last year and was involved in the Stop Hinckley campaign against the proposed building of Hinkley C, which would be the largest nuclear plant in Britain.

The paperboat website says: “The Crispin Aubrey Legacy Fund has been established to support the spirit of determination and good causes that Crispin valued: promoting renewable energy, campaigning work and investigative journalism.

“Through this fund we hope to continue Crispin’s legacy by supporting individuals, both young and old, who are passionate about exposing injustice, campaigning for greater environmental awareness and/or the use of renewable energy.

“In 2014, the Crispin Aubrey Legacy Fund hopes to provide a scholarship for journalism student(s) who demonstrate a commitment to environmental and/or investigative journalism. In particular, those championing issues that are currently receiving little coverage in the mainstream media.”
