Regional daily’s offices put up for sale

A regional daily newspaper has put its offices up for sale as it searches for a new home in the city.

The Argus in Brighton is planning to move out of its buildings in Hollingbury on the outskirts of the city and ‘For Sale’ signs have appeared outside its base.

The buildings total 16,989 sq m on a site of around 4.5 acres and are being marketed by Flude Commercial, which said there was “excellent potential for redevelopment”.

Last year, HTFP reported that The Argus had agreed to sell its offices to the Brighton and Hove Bus Company, which planned to create a new bus depot, but it appears the deal has fallen through.

The Brighton and Hove Independent reported that The Argus’ current offices are “largely empty” and its move to new premises was not likely to take place until next year.

The regional daily’s Crowhurst Road offices, which are opposite an Asda supermarket, comprise two main buildings – one of which was previously used for printing the title.

But the press has not been used since 2009, when it was closed by parent company Newsquest and printing of the newspaper moved to Southampton.

The other building is a mix of office accommodation, storage space and an enclosed car park.

Flude Commercial is marketing the site with a long leasehold for sale.

The Argus had not responded to requests for a comment at the time of publication.
