Regional daily shows day in the life of newsroom

A regional daily has produced a live blog detailing what happened during a day in the life of its newsroom.

The Worcester News came up with the initiative to mark Local Newspaper Week, which runs from 13-19 May on the theme of press freedom.

Its live blog, which kicked off at 7am on Wednesday, coincided with the aftermath of a city hall putsch on Tuesday evening that saw Labour replace the Tories  as the ruling party in Worcester.

The blog continued throughout the day, telling readers about how decisions at the paper are made and what happened at its morning news conference.

Other big stories covered during the day included a fire in Malvern, a new city mayor taking office and the ongoing controversy surrounding a UKIP councillor accused of racist comments.

An article about the live blog and press freedom said: “We believe passionately that you have the right to be kept fully informed about what is happening.

“Our job is to cut through the smokescreens and get to the true facts of the matter. We don’t let evasive answers, unreturned phone calls – and, sometimes, outright lies – prevent us from seeking to publish the truth.

“This is what press freedom truly means; our right to responsibly seek out the true facts on your behalf and present them in a fair, accurate and balanced way.”

The blog can be viewed here.

This was the best example I’ve seen yet of how not to run a live blog. If it represents a typical day in the newsroom then the Worcester News must be a very boring place to work. Much of the commentary in the morning was spent with a fascinating insight into the tea round and pictures of people standing around not doing much. The afternoon descended into true tedium with massive gaps between wholly unexciting posts including three separate entries about a reporter who was leaving.
