Regional dailies unveil new-look websites in JP roll-out

Two Johnston Press regional dailies have unveiled new-look websites as the roll-out across the regional publisher continues.

Sheffield’s The Star and the Blackpool Gazette both launched their redesigned sites on Monday, which aim to be easier to navigate for users.

The websites features an improved player for videos, a new What’s On section, a “Picks of The Day” slot on every article and their Twitter feeds are now on their homepages to give them more prominence.

The titles have relaunched their sites as part of the roll-out across Johnston Press, which began with Portsmouth’s The News in March and also saw the Northampton Chronicle and Echo and the Northants Telegraph unveil their sites last week.

In an article about the new-look site, Gazette editor Jon Rhodes said: “I’m delighted to be able to offer this significantly improved experience for our desktop website users.

“I really believe our new-look site will help our audience to find and enjoy our great online content and services.

“But to make sure we’re doing the best possible job we can, I’m keen for as much feedback as possible. So please do let me know what you think by commenting online or responding to our survey.”

The sites also display contact information for the papers more prominently and further enhancements are set to be made in the coming months, including for their mobile sites.

The Star’s article on its relaunched site said: “The Star’s popular web site gets a brand new improved look today to enhance our paper experience online – check it out and let us know what you think.

“About 600,000 people a month already visit thestar.co.uk and our users view more than a million pages a week.

“Now we have given it a great new look, making it even easier to navigate. All your favourite content will still be available and existing registered users will be able to use their current log-in for commenting.

“But you will find three distinct editorial sections, bringing everything together – news, sport and what’s on.”

Definitely an improvement – and definitely better than the horrendous redesign of some of the Local World group websites. Can someone explain how on earth the new bristolpost.co.uk has been shortlisted for website of the year?

Imagine if newspapers received the bland PR guff that they dish out to HTFP. I can’t read the quotes – they’re nauseating. And that further disenfranchises me.

One trend I notice is they alwasy say feedback is important … but then do nothing. The Bristol Post feedback was 100% negative on their forums but still the irritating popup adverts appear.

‘Feedback’ doesn’t change anything, just as ‘being in consultation’ means you are definitely being made redundant.

Re: that ‘great online content’. There’s a video clip on the Gazette website of local pop sensation Little Boots at a signing session that looks like a scene from Michael Haneke’s Hidden, albeit without the human warmth, and laughs.
Probably not what they were aiming for.
