Photographer marks 30-year milestone with exhibition

A former press photographer who lives in Lancaster is celebrating 30 years behind the lens with an exhibition and talk.

Steve Pendrill, left, who is originally from Ayrshire in Scotland, has worked for most of his career on Lancaster & Morecambe Newspapers but left in 2009 to focus on his freelance business.

In his exhibition entitled, 30 Years Behind The Lens; Press Photographer & Beyond, Steve brings to life three decades of press photos as well as recent examples of recent wedding, portrait and corporate work.

Adding a bit of fun to the event, he will wear a 1950s press photographer mac, trilby and vintage camera for his talk, and visitors will hear the quirky stories behind the pictures and learn how the industry has changed.

“The talk will be lighthearted and entertaining as opposed to being educational,” he told HTFP. “A lot has happened in the industry in the last 30 years, there has been a lot of changes.

“My talk will showcase a variety of my work, it is about pictures telling stories whether it is a wedding, gala or royal visit.”

Steve Pendrill is marking 30 years as a photographer this month

Steve believes he was one of the first press photographers to go straight from school to the newsroom and remembers covering big stories right from the beginning of his career.

“I was crossing picket lines (during the miners’ strike of 1984-85) and photographing Margaret Thatcher being interviewed was one of my most memorable experiences,” he added.

“I gave my first talk a few years ago and got such a tremendous response which made me realise that other people, as well as myself, were interested in my work.”

Steve’s exhibition runs from 28 October to 12 November, with the talk at 6.30pm on 6 November, at The Sanctuary at Lancaster Library.
