PCC director addresses journalists’ gathering

The interim boss of the Press Complaints Commission was guest speaker at the annual general meeting of the Chartered Institute of Journalists in London on Saturday.

Michael McManus, currently the executive director of transition at the PCC, explained how he sees press regulation working through the industry’s proposed Independent Press Standards Organisation (Ipso).

The industry has proposed the new body as an alternative to the system of press regulation proposed by the three main political parties.

Michael joined the PCC in February last year with a specific brief to oversee the transition of the PCC into a new, successor body with a comprehensive range of regulatory sanctions. He previously worked as a special adviser in three government departments and run the private office for former Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath.
