Newspaper columnist returns to airwaves after ‘sexist’ piece

A newspaper columnist who was suspended from his BBC radio show after a controversial piece about women’s football has returned to the airwaves.

Daily Record columnist Tam Cowan was off the air for two weeks from his Off the Ball show on BBC Radio Scotland following an article in the paper, which has been labelled as “sexist”.

In Tam’s controversial column, he wrote that Fir Park should have been “torched on Thursday in order to cleanse the stadium” after it hosted the women’s match between Scotland and Bosnia, which he described as a “turgid spectacle”.

On his radio show on Saturday, one of the themes was regrets and he apologised on air, saying he had “made my peace” with the Scottish Women’s Football Association.

On lifting his suspension, the BBC said: “We’ve had several discussions with Tam following his newspaper column and he has made it clear to us that he made a serious error of judgement, for which he has apologised. He has also been reminded of his responsibilities as a broadcaster for BBC Scotland.”

Last week, Herald columnist Graham Spiers leapt to Tam’s defence over the column, saying he thought his apology should be accepted and life should move on.

Good to see the Whitstable Times sparking a debate – it really does make a change from arguments over early day closing, traffic jams and Down From London (DFL) types pushing up the house prices! And yes I agree with the comments that it’s the Trendy Lefties being offended because someone has dared to take a contrary view.
