Newsagents welcome daily’s cover price rise

A regional daily has been praised by a newsagents group after raising its cover price by 5p.

The Eastern Daily Press has increased the price of its Monday to Friday editions to 75p this week, after a similar increase in the price of the Saturday paper.

The National Federation of Retail Newsagents has welcomed the cover price rise because it is accompanied by pro-rata terms for retailers.

The newsagents’ body said terms of 20pc for retailers were being maintained, so they would now receive 15p for every copy sold.

Alan Smith, NFRN news operations chairman, said: “The success of local newspapers is in no small part down to the efforts of independent newsagents in promoting them to the local communities.

“We are pleased that the publisher of the Eastern Daily Press, Archant, continues to recognise the critical role that independent newsagents play and is rewarding them accordingly.”

The previous cover price rise was also accompanied by pro-rata terms for newsagents.

EDP publishers Archant declined to comment.

Instead of raising the cover price one would expect them to reduce it following the dreadful copy sales figures reported here recently, but not mentioned by Archant, losing 11.8% of their sales now down to an all time low, presumably their remaining advertising customers are looking for rate reductions too?
sadly it just smacks of yet another cynical attempt to grasp money from their readers in a market they have lost their way in
