New town base for newspaper after three-month exile

Staff at an East Midlands weekly are preparing to move to new premises next month – nearly three months after their old premises closed.

The Derbyshire Times moved out of its historic Station Road home on 22 March after 100 years of publishing.

Journalists were temporarily exiled to the offices of sister paper the Chad in Mansfield, 12 miles away, while the new offices at Spire Walk in Chesterfield were made ready.

Now bosses at the Johnston Press owned title have announced the new premises will be open for business from 10 June.

The recently completed Spire Walk development, just a stone’s throw away from the old offices, houses B&Q and Toys R Us superstores along with other business units.

Times editor James Mitchinson said: “This has been a very delicate move, requiring precision planning and logistics. It has also required a helping hand from our readers, advertisers and supporters, to whom I’m immensely grateful for bearing with us, because it will all be worth it.

“I’m in no doubt this relocation will place us in an even more prominent town centre location, right in the heart of Chesterfield, making it even easier for people to come to see us.

“Our new home is state-of-the-art. The technology on tap will enable the DT to lead the way in digital publishing, whilst continuing to publish award-winning newspapers, for years to come.”

Managing Director John Bills added: “Make no mistake about it, we’ve picked one of the best locations in Chesterfield for doing what we do.

“As with any move, it has caused some disruption, but the editorial and commercial teams’ meticulous planning and constant communication with the local public has kept that disruption to a minimum.

“We’re now looking forward to showing people the new facility, and invite people to come along once we’re up and running”

Since leaving Station Road, the paper has maintained a town centre presence with a reception desk at the local Chamber of Commerce offies in Canal Wharf.

Added James: “The hiatus between exiting Station Road, and getting access to our new home has been a real challenge. It has been a challenge editorial staff have risen to using their new mobile journalism kit, and the commercial team with their iPads.

“I’m certain that we could not have continued to produce the kind of products we have been producing during this time without the new kit.”

“I’d also like to say a sincere thank you to Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce, who have provided us with a first class reception area on Canal Wharf, where we will continue to serve the public until 10 June.”
