New monthly newspaper hits the streets in seaside town

A new monthly newspaper will hit the streets tomorrow as the newspaper battle in a seaside town hots up.

The Scarborough Review has been launched by former Scarborough News sub-editor Pete Spence as a 32-page tabloid size newspaper for the town.

The first edition of the free title, which is part of the existing Review brand, will be available to pick-up in supermarkets, newsagents, sports clubs and pubs across the area and 10,000 copies will be printed.

It is the second new title to be created for Scarborough in recent months, following the launch of the monthly Scarborough Voice magazine in March, and comes after the decision last year by publisher Johnston Press to switch the News from daily to weekly publication.

Pete said: “We are delighted to finally see the Scarborough Review in print and it is very exciting, not only for us, but for the town as well.

“The response to the idea of a new newspaper for Scarborough and surrounding areas has been fantastic and we believe we have delivered a quality product, especially when you consider it is free to pick up.

“Ailsa Robertson (sales manager) and myself would like to thank everyone who has made the launch of this paper possible and we hope to grow and go from strength-to-strength in the future.”

The Review will include local community news, features, sport, entertainment and leisure.

Pete first revealed plans last December to launch a newspaper for Scarborough, which he initially hoped would be a weekly publication.

He later teamed up with the Review brand, which has been established for more than 25 years and publishes titles in the Holme Valley, Marple and High Peak areas.

So now JP has two rival publications for the locals advertisers to buy into, brought about by redundancies at The News. At least the rivals won’t have outsourced to India – I hope.
