Magazine goes up in size after 274 years

Regional newspaper publisher DC Thomson has relaunched one of the world’s oldest magazines with a 50pc increase in size.

The Scots Magazine, first published in 1739, has gone from an A5 to B5 size in what editors claim is one of the biggest changes in its 274-year history.

It has also undergone a redesign to improve the presentation of stories and pictures.

Editor-in-chief Sally Hampton said the new look was targeted for “today’s audience.”

“The striking new look comes after an extensive programme of research into the interests and lifestyles of contemporary Scots,” she said.

“Close collaboration between our editorial and design teams has produced a magazine that’s both clean and classic, and allows us to showcase the best that Scotland has to offer.  I’m absolutely delighted with the results.”

The issue, which is now on the shelves, features an interview with Scottish-born Hollywood star Brian Cox, who has appeared in films including The Bourne Identity and X2 as well as TV shows including Red Dwarf and Frasier.

The new style Scots Magazine is a disgrace. The Editor’s reasons for changing what was a Scottish institution simply do not wash. It is now a shoddy, overpriced magazine with nothing to differentiate it from other Scottish publications. My newsagent has informed me that his sales of the magazine have dropped dramatically since the change, and no wonder. The Editor should be taken to task and booted out if the original format is not restored immediately. I URGE all fellow readers of a like mind to make their views known to D C Thomson in the hope that action will be taken.
