JP journalists to film snapshots of the longest day

Journalists from newspapers across Johnston Press will produce videos capturing life on their patches on the longest day of the year tomorrow as part of a nationwide campaign.

The regional publisher launched its ‘Summer of Love’ campaign earlier this month across its newspaper titles as a joint editorial and advertising initiative to urge local businesses to advertise and to also encourage readers to support local companies.

As part of the campaign, each title will put together a video compiled of clips taken on the longest day of the year on Friday by their own journalists and by readers, who are being asked to send in their own videos and photos.

The Summer of Love initiative runs throughout June at Johnston Press newspapers and is using the Twitter hashtag #summeroflove, while the video project is using the hashtag #longestlocalday.

Tweeting about the plans, outgoing Sheffield Star editor Jeremy Clifford said: “All video plans in place for #longestlocalday and celeb poet Ian McMillan has penned poem for the video. Send in your clips for June 21.”

And Peterborough Telegraph editor Mark Edwards tweeted: “We want you to help us compile a video on Friday. #longestlocalday – the story of a day in the life of our region…”

In a story about the project, the Telegraph said: “On Friday, June 21, our journalists will be out and about recording some aspect of life in Peterborough and the surrounding region – in just 15 seconds.

“From sunrise over the Cathedral to sunset at ‘Sunny Hunny’ on the coast we’ll be capturing some of the typical – and often special – moments that make up a typical day.

“Some may record a few seconds’ footage as they are out reporting on a job others may take some spur of the moment shots on their smartphones.

“What we would like you, our army of readers, to do is join in and send us your own short clip. It could be from your work place, favourite chippy, a city charity or a park bench – if it means Peterborough to you then let us share it.

“Our digital team will then be combining them to make one mini-movie summing up the longest day in Peterborough and the surrounding region.”

‘We want something that you’ve got for nothing as per usual’. Seems to be the new motto for the regional press. I’d rather use Facebook

Wonder if they will capture that beautiful moment, just after the summer sun rises and is in the morning sky, when the journalists are called into their editor’s office and told they’re being made redundant. Ah, the spirit of summer – Johnston-style!
