Guardian writer opens new journalism centre at university

Budding journalists are set to benefit after a state-of-the-art media centre was opened at a university.

Guardian features writer Simon Hattenstone officially opened the new Journalism and Media Centre at the University of St Mark and St John in Plymouth.

The centre was designed by the lecturers and houses an iPad teaching room, full iMac classroom, four iMac media editing suites, two of which act as a radio studio, and an editorial meeting room.

Adrian Emerson, head of journalism and creative arts at the university, said: “I’m delighted to open this new centre, which will help us give our journalism and media students the best possible grounding in the skills they will need to work in the industry.

“We have received great support from the university throughout the planning of this impressive centre, which represents a substantial investment by the institution, and we look forward to using it to produce the journalists and media professionals of the future.”

The university teaches BA programmes in Journalism, Sports Journalism and Media Production.
