German news beat for former regional daily reporter

A former reporter with two regional dailies has been made editor of the Berlin-based news website carrying German news in English.

Tom Bristow, who worked at the Eastern Daily Press and Norwich Evening News, started work as editor of German news site The Local.de last week.

The site is designed to cater for English expats in Germany as well as other English speakers based there, and averages around 600,000 unique visitors a month.

Sister sites operate in Sweden, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and Norway giving a total readership of over three million a month.

Said Tom: “It’s always exciting to start a new challenge but to go from Norfolk to Berlin has been a big step, although many of the skills reporters learn in the regional press are equally useful out here.”

Before joining the EDP, the 26-year-old previously worked at weekly newspaper the Southport Visiter in Merseyside.

Managing editor of The Local James Savage said: “We often recruit from the British regional press, finding that it is a great talent pool of journalists who really engage with their audience, which is an invaluable skill for a growing publication like The Local.”

Good luck Tom. It’s great to see a website investing in professional journalists.
