G8 meeting spawns Cameron scoop for daily

A regional daily scooped an exclusive interview with David Cameron as world leaders arrived in Northern Ireland for the G8 summit.

Staff at the Belfast Telegraph have been working around the clock to cover the summit at Lough Erne, Fermanagh this week.

Reporter Adrian Rutherford secured a pre-summit interview with Prime Minister Mr Cameron in which he expressed frustration at the pace of moves in Northern Ireland to bring the Protestant and Catholic communities together.

The newspaper also produced a 64-page glossy souvenir supplement entitled Northern Ireland is Gr8 which was circulated to all delegates along with thousands of journalists from across the world, winning praise from the Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe.

A three man team headed by political editor Liam Clarke has been in Fermanagh since Saturday, ensuring 24/7 coverage of the summit itself, the security operation and the reaction from locals.

Editor Mike Gilson said: “I very proud of our small team who have produced sparkling newspapers and up-to-the-minute websites full of brilliant words which have summed up what a show of faith this G8 summit is for Northern Ireland and its future.”
