Former parliamentary reporter marks 100th birthday

A former regional journalist who became editor of  the official parliamentary report Hansard has celebrated his 100th birthday.

Richard Dring started his journalism career at the Herts Advertiser before moving on to work for Hansard, the official transcript of Parliamentary proceedings, where he rose to become editor.

He retired from the role in 1979 at the age of 66 but retained his keen interest in politics.

Richard received a card from the Queen earlier this month to mark his 100th birthday and celebrated the milestone with family and neighbours.

In a story about his birthday, son Colin who lives on the same street, said: “He really enjoyed the day. He got his card from the Queen and was thrilled. He is a very strong character.

“He has always been involved in playing sport – he played a lot of golf, which I think has helped keep him fit.”

“He still keeps a very keen interest in politics. He loves watching the parliamentary programme on the television and has always been interested in the news.”
