A former deputy editor at a weekly newspaper has died at the age of 87.
Renee Oldfield was the former deputy editor of the now-defunct Palmers Green and Southgate Gazette in North London.
She joined the paper in the early 1960s under the editorship of John Ginn and later served under his successor Bert Huggins.
Renee was a member of the National Union of Journalists and served as treasurer of its north London branch.
She died on 19 April and her funeral will be held on 1 May at 3.45pm at New Southgate Crematorium in Brunswick Park Road, London.
Renee’s family have requested donations at her funeral for good causes which have yet to be announced.
Am wondering if this is Renee Oldfield, a young reporter I knew when I joined the South Yorkshire Times before the fifties ?
SYT editor, the great SC Hacking (anyone remember him?), placed me at Rotherham – so I had no working contact with Renee but I think her husband was Irving Oldfield, another Mexborough great.
Happily I still have Maurice Thompson pictures of all of us at some great dos in our YEN/Doncaster Gazette days.
