Editors launch online guide for aspiring journalists

A new online guide has been launched giving advice to would-be journalists about what editors are looking for.

The new section on the Society of Editors’ website aims to inform those who are considering a career in the media industry.

It includes a list of do’s and don’ts based on ‘real-life horror stories’ from the world of journalism.

Other questions answered include whether accreditation actually matters and whether 100wpm shorthand is still essential, with further advice on how best to secure an interview, and how to impress an editor once you have walked through the door.

Simon Bucks, associate editor of Sky News and chairman of the Society’s training committee said:  “This new section of the Society of Editors website is designed to reflect the requirements of editors across all platforms – print, broadcast and online – when they are recruiting trainees. It is also a valuable resource for careers advisors and anyone else seeking information about our industry.”
