Editor recruits town crier to publicise newspaper

A weekly editor reverted to traditional methods of communicating news to promote his paper’s current edition.

Littlehampton Gazette news chief Roger Green recently helped judge a competition for town criers at historic Arundel Castle.

Afterwards he persuaded the winner, Ken Knowles from Lichfield, to produce a video publicising the paper’s coverage of the event.

Ken duly obliged, tweaking his competition entry to urge people to “read all about it” in this week’s paper.

Said Roger:  “For centuries, town criers performed the role now carried out by local newspapers like the Gazette, keeping people informed, passing on important information and entertaining their listeners.

“Now newspapers are increasingly using the web and videos as part of their news coverage, so it seemed right to bring together the old and the new to plug our own coverage of what was a fun and fascinating competition.”
