Daily-turned-weekly to move offices after 30 years

A daily-turned-weekly paper will remain in the town centre as it moves offices next month.

The Northampton Chronicle & Echo will move from its home on Upper Mounts, where it has been based for more than 30 years, to new offices at Victoria Road.

The new offices are just 200m away from the paper’s current base and the move is expected to take place by the middle of September.

Its current base was put up for sale more than two years ago because the building was too big for its needs, following the closure of the printing press by Johnston Press in 2008.

The weekly is the latest JP title to move to new office accommodation as part of plans by the company to ensure all its offices are “fit for purpose”.

Editor David Summers said: “The Upper Mounts building has served the Chron well over the years but it is showing its age and the new office at Albert House provides a considerably more modern working environment.

“It was very important for us to stay in the town centre and at the heart of our community. We remain within sight of the courts and walking distance of the borough and county council offices, which is important for maintaining comprehensive coverage.”

The paper told readers about the upcoming move on its Facebook page and said it could not yet reveal the plans for its current base.

It said: “As some of you may already know, we’re moving offices. We’re relocating to an office in Victoria St, (near the crown court car park) from mid September.

“Anyone who has been inside our existing home will understand why we’re moving. The important thing for us is remaining in the town centre.

“Can’t go into full details of plans for our existing place, but all will be revealed in due course.”
