Comedian pens song about injured weekly reporter

A weekly newspaper reporter who suffered a broken wrist in a football match has become the unlikely subject of a song by a comedian.

Brian Haran, left, from the Surrey Mirror was injured while playing six-a-side football with colleagues from Local World newsrooms in East Surrey and Sussex and his broken wrist became the subject of a song by musical comedian Jonny Awsum.

He penned the song “Make Brian’s Day” which was performed at the Hull Freedom Festival on Saturday night and has now been posted on YouTube, gaining around 50 views so far.

Brian was nominated as the subject of the song by Oliver Frankham, chief reporter at the Surrey Mirror and Dorking and Leatherhead Advertiser.

Said Oliver: “I’ve seen Jonny’s show, I know what he does. One of the things on his to do list – the show is called Jonny Awsum’s To Do List – is making someone’s day. It is generally people who need cheering up.

“On Friday he put something up on Facebook and Twitter asking for nominations and it was around the time Brian was texting from hospital. I thought it was ideal.”

Brian received his injury while in goal stopping a shot from Advertiser news editor David Blackmore and the game ended with the Crawley and Croydon team beating the Surrey team 13-12.

He said: “I have never had a song written about me before, I’m close to tears. It scans, it’s catchy, if it’s not in the charts by tomorrow then my name is Brian.”
