Chelsea’s visit to Robins spawns supplement for daily

A daily newspaper took advantage of its football team’s cup draw against Premier League giants Chelsea by publishing an eight-page supplement to mark the occasion.

The Swindon Advertiser produced the pull out on the morning of Swindon Town’s Capital One League Cup clash with Jose Mourinho’s side on Tuesday.

The editon, pictured below, featured a photo of the Chelsea manager with the inside pages including a match preview, squad comparison and interview with Robins’ boss Mark Cooper.

He joked in the pre-match interview that he would only be able to offer former Real Madrid boss Mourinho a post-match glass of Blossom Hill.

Although Swindon Town were beaten 2-0 by their Premier League opponents, deputy sports editor Craig Lyus said the supplement went down well with readers.

“We put out a supplement for any big sporting occasion and try and sell some advertising off it,” he said.

“We also did the front cover a couple of weeks in advance and started floating it on social media and that always seems to get a good response.”

The supplement also included an opinion column from the paper’s chief sports writer Sam Morshead and a chat with former Swindon Town academy coach Jimmy Fraser who now works in a similar role at Chelsea.

It was produced on the morning of the third round tie and the newspaper had also featured a number of news articles and competitions surrounding the hotly anticipated fixture.

“We’ve had something in the paper about it every day for the past two weeks and it seems to have gone down well with everyone,” added Craig.
