Charity walk held to remember former journalist’s mum

A former regional press journalist joined her sister for a 46-mile walk over 24 hours to raise money in memory of their late mother.

Amanda Holmes, who previously worked at the Lincolnshire Echo, Sheffield Star and Yorkshire Post, took part in the challenge with sister Deborah, a former owner of the weekly Stocksbridge Trader in north Sheffield.

They carried out the walk around the boundary of Bradfield Parish, near Sheffield, in memory of their mum Peggy who died five years ago and will raise funds for Diabetes UK, after Amanda’s son Oliver was diagnosed with the condition last year.

Amanda, who is also a Bradfield parish councillor, worked in the regional press before venturing into broadcasting at YTV’s Calendar and then moving into PR.

Deborah Holmes, left, and sister Amanda, right, will remember their mother Peggy, centre, on the walk.

She said: “My oldest child, Oliver, 15, was diagnosed with diabetes last year so that has really focused our thoughts on doing something in Mum’s memory but also on trying to raise some funds for Diabetes UK.”

Deborah added: “We have been thinking for some time now that we’d like to do something in memory of our Mum.

“We both really love walking and we have so many lovely memories of spending time with our Mum and Dad and later with our own children in the area, so we decided to look at walking the Bradfield boundary.”

The sisters have been training for the challenge since February this year and navigating the different sections of the boundary walk with their father Dennis helping out.

A group of around 20 family and friends, including some from regional newspapers and TV, joined them for the walk, which started in Bolderstone near Sheffield.

The pair can be sponsored by visiting their JustGiving page.
