Yorkshire women’s magazine sees in a decade

A Yorkshire based magazine that provides news stories for women is celebrating its tenth anniversary.

Leeds journalist Dawn-Maria France set up the independent Yorkshire Women’s Life Magazine with other journalists after graduating with a journalism degree from Humberside University and working for a number of publications.

She successfully applied for European and Millennium Commission funding to set up the publication after realising that professional women, keen on writing themselves, had little to ‘get stuck into’ by way of reading material.

Dawn-Maria launched the award winning publication following extensive telemarketing research to find out exactly what women want.

Said Dawn-Maria: “Since the launch of the website we are reaching women as far away as India.

“The magazine still has a Yorkshire focus but it is ideal for women nationwide because it deals with issues that affect all the female population and encourages subscribers to write in and get their articles published where possible for the attention of thousands of other like-minded women.”

The lifestyle magazine includes features on recommended books, celebrity interviews, restaurant and health spa reviews, high street fashion, international women’s news and women’s issues.

Recent articles have included dealing with debt due to the recent downturn, domestic violence, girls being bullied due to their looks, women-only business environments, airbrushing images in the media and psychometric testing for graduate candidates.

Dawn-Maria has won two prestigious awards for the publication, including the Leeds Owl Award for showing initiative by providing frequent and relevant news stories for women, and the Walking with Excellence Award for creating a topical, informative magazine for women.

It was also nominated for the travel press awards.
