Weekly produces souvenir publication for steam fair

A weekly newspaper produced a special souvenir publication for visitors to one of the world’s biggest steam fairs.

The Western Gazette produced a 40-page publication for the Great Dorset Steam Fair, charting the event’s 44-year history and profiling some of the people involved with it, including its late founder Mike Oliver.

The publication went on sale for £1 at the show, held at Tarrant Hinton, near Blandford Forum, with 3,000 copies being printed ahead of it.

More than 200,000 people attended the fair, which ran until Sunday, and boasted a music festival, radio station and a special beer.

Editor Emma Slee said: “After successfully producing a special publication to make the Queen’s Jubilee and Royal visit to our area in June, we wanted to produce something really special for one of the biggest events in our region.

“It is a great opportunity to add to sales and put the Western Gazette brand in front of a wider audience.

“The resulting publication looks stunning and really encapsulates the colour and rich texture of the event.”

The publication was designed by assistant editor Pete Brooke with scores of photos sourced by chief photographer Len Copland from the Western Gazette archive, while a series of features were written by Brian Moore.
