Sports journalist completes 500-mile European cycle ride

A sports journalist has raised nearly £6,000 for charity by cycling from Amsterdam to Berlin and then running a marathon.

Jack Travers, who works for the Sportsbeat Press Agency and is also a journalism tutor for News Associates, took part in the 500-mile cycle ride last month with friend James Macfee.

The pair completed the ride in five days and then had only a few days to recover before taking part in the Berlin Marathon, with Jack completing it in just over three-and-a-half hours.

Jack raised £4,000 for the Sarah Greene Breakthrough Tribute Fund, a breast cancer charity, and £1,900 for the Alex Wilson Appeal – a scholarship fund set up in memory of his friend who died in an accident.

He said: “The whole experience was superb. We were slightly nervous about the route and our recovery time between cycle and marathon but everything worked out perfectly which was great.

“The cycle was more of a mental battle while the run was obviously pretty physical but both were strangely enjoyable! In a way I was sad the trip finished but then again it was brilliant to finish the job well and to enjoy Berlin which is a fantastic city.”
