South London newspaper launches new edition

A weekly newspaper has launched a new edition today designed to cater for readers in the south of its patch.

The Croydon Advertiser launched its new South edition, marking new era in its 143-year history.

It will be devoted to covering the south of the borough and is an expansion of the paper’s previous Coulsdon and Purley edition.

The new paper will also cover the areas of Kenley, Sanderstead, Selsdon and South Croydon and will be distributed via a part-paid, part-free distribution model, available for sale every Friday for 65p.

Editor Glenn Ebrey said: “Croydon is a huge place and the biggest challenge for us as a newspaper is to make sure we are giving all areas an equally high standard of coverage.

“The new paper will allow us to tackle the news that matters to people in the south of the borough in far more depth.

A new edition of the Croydon Advertiser has been launched

“We won’t just be scratching the surface, rather giving those in the south of Croydon the quantity and quality of coverage those in north and central Croydon have come to expect from the Advertiser.”

The first edition saw the launch of the Support our Shops campaign, following an Advertiser investigation which revealed that just one in five independent traders in the south of the borough saw an increase in business last year.

Glenn added: “The so-called ‘death of the high street’ is a very live issue and one that has been reported widely elsewhere, but we feel it is particularly relevant to the communities in the south of Croydon.

“We hope the new paper will reflect the issues that matter the people in the south and this campaign is hopefully the start of our commitment to achieving this.”

The Northcliffe-owned Advertiser will continue to produce three other editions every Friday: the traditional main edition, plus papers serving New Addington and Sutton.

The story on right of the front page – ‘OAP and tot in pram hit by car’. What was the OAP doing in the pram?

I like campaigns, and hats off for the SOS efforts. But surely better to save this for a week with slow news, or use it as second lead/masthead boost on a week with such good stories? OAP and tot in pram hit by car, OAP in blaze death and kid mugged for 10p could all have been good-selling splashes.

    Hi Steve

Thanks for the feedback. I see where you are coming from and, in a ‘normal’ week, all three of those stories (especially the house fire) would have been nailed-on splashes.

However, we felt for the first week, we wanted something to set a marker for the new edition and also tackle an issue of mass appeal, which almost everyone within our readership could relate to. It also establishes the credentials of the South edition, as a paper that will reflect the issues very specific to that part of Croydon.

I’m not in any way disagreeing with your point – just thought I’d clarify the thought process behind the splash!
