Royal visit provides sales boost for newspaper

A souvenir supplement of the Queen’s visit to Worcester helped provide a major sales boost to the local daily paper.

Sale of the Worcester News the day after the 11 July visit rose 21pc on the previous week and were 13pc up year on year.

The performance outstripped the big sale created by special coverage of the Olympic Torch relay through the city, which produced a 7pc year on year increase.

The paper’s extensive website coverage on the day of the royal visit also saw a huge audience surge, with traffic up 175pc and more than 270,000 page views on the paper’s online picture gallery.

Editor Peter John said: “The sales figure was far better than we had hoped.

“This was a great example of print and online combining to provide a comprehensive service that our readers reacted to in huge numbers.”
