Regional daily backs campaign with masthead change

A regional daily is backing a campaign against domestic violence by adding a white ribbon to its masthead.

The Worcester News is backing The 16 Days of Action, an international event which aims to end violence against women and runs until 10 December.

Its masthead will display the campaign logo of a white ribbon throughout the 16 days to show its support for the event, which has also been backed by the Worcestershire Forum Against Domestic Abuse.

The 16 Days of Action was originally launched in Canada in 1991 and since then, more than 2000 organisations in over 156 countries have taken part in a bid to tackle domestic abuse and violence against women.

Group editor Peter John said: “We were approached by the Worcestershire Forum against Domestic Abuse who asked for our help to raise awareness about the issue, and its scale.

“Police tell us that domestic abuse is a very under-reported crime. It happens behind closed doors and is hidden from the world.  Many of our friends and colleagues are, unbeknown to us, living in constant fear of the next beating, or torture, or humiliation or mental bullying.

“It’s our job as a newspaper to expose wrongdoing and to help make our communities safer, better places. The White Ribbon campaign aims to do that.”

Martin Lakeman, strategic co-ordinator for the forum, said: “It’s an important event as it helps to highlight what can be done to tackle violence against women at a local level, supported by events and activities throughout the world.

“We are heartened by the level of support and interest that The 16 Days of Action campaign receives locally.

“We work hard all year round to raise awareness of the misery that domestic abuse causes to families throughout Worcestershire; however an event such as this really helps bring it to the forefront of people’s minds.

“Raising awareness of what is so often a hidden issue is vital in addressing – and ultimately overcoming – domestic abuse. The simple message is, do not suffer in silence.”

The campaign includes a number of events taking place in Worcestershire, including a candle-lit vigil and an event where men complete a one-mile walk in women’s shoes.
