Photographer goes into print with football book

A local press photographer who has become a cult hero at West Ham United has written a book about his career.

Archant London snapper Stevie Bacon has doubled up as the Hammers’ official photographer for the past 30 years.

He has become such a legend at the club that chants of “there’s only one Stevie Bacon” regularly ring out around its Upton Park stadium.

Now Steve has used the chant as the title for a book looking back at his career, subtitled:  “My Life Watching West Ham Through a Camera Lens.”

Over the years Steve has enjoyed unlimited access behind the scenes – forming part of the club’s backroom team and travelling with the squad.

He has established close relationships with many of the club’s managers and players, including Billy Bonds, Harry Redknapp, Trevor Brooking and Frank Lampard.

Reviewing the book, Archant London West Ham correspondent, Dave Evans, wrote: “From the inside track on the bust up between Billy Bonds and Harry Redknapp to  the flying fears of Paolo Di Canio, it is all in this new autobiography of a man who has been described by many as a ‘legend’ of the club.

“It is simply a must-read for all West Ham fans and I am not saying that just because Steve sits next to me in the office!”

The book was co-written with the help of Archant London sports reporter colleague Kirk Blows.

There’s Only One Stevie Bacon is published by Biteback Publishing – run by media pundit and lifelong Hammers fan Iain Dale – and is available in bookshops and at Amazon.co.uk priced £11.19 or on Kindle at £10.07.

    Kirk Blows?

You’ll have to ask the man himself
