Weekly’s anniversary concert hailed a success

A music concert held to celebrate a newspaper’s 75th anniversary has been hailed a success.

The Scunthorpe Telegraph held a “Birthday Bash” last Friday to celebrate the milestone anniversary, which was attended by 1,700 people.

At the event, held at the town’s Baths Hall, seven acts appeared including boyband Lawson, Misha B, Stooshe and Scunthorpe schoolboy Luke West.

The paper joined forces with radio station Lincs FM to organise the concert, which aimed to reward current readers, attract new ones and appeal to a younger audience.

Editor David Atkin said: “We hit upon the idea of staging a concert in March but knew that if we were to make it a success we’d need help, so approached Lincs FM.

“They loved the idea and since then we’ve formed a unique partnership to make Friday’s concert possible. They have great contacts in the music industry and attracted chart stars such as Lawson, Misha B and Stooshe to perform at the concert.

“In all we had seven acts and the show was opened by Luke West, who recently won a Scunthorpe talent contest.

“Throughout the build-up to the concert we’ve worked closely with Lincs FM to get the sponsors and advertisers to help make the concert possible.”

He said a joint promotion had been run with the different acts who were performing revealed each week and readers could get tickets through a text competition.

The paper published a 12-page supplement the day before the concert and is putting together a new one for this week.

Added David: “Not only has the Telegraph never staged anything like this before, neither has the town. We’ve learnt a great deal as we’ve gone along and hope to stage a similar event in the future. It’s been a great team effort by all concerned.”
