Newspaper prints supplement to mark Royal visit

Prince Charles started the presses rolling for a special supplement to mark his visit to a local newspaper office in South Yorkshire.

The prince toured the newsroom of the 153-year-old Barnsley Chronicle during his visit  to the town on 24 January, and was shown the first edition of the paper that was printed in 1858.

The special royal supplement commemorating his visit to the newspaper included a front-page picture that had been taken just an hour before as he arrived at the Chronicle offices.

It was handed out to crowds hoping to catch a glimpse of the royal visitor.

Sir Nicholas Hewitt, chairman of the newspaper, led the prince on the tour where he met many of the group’s 200 employees.

Said Sir Nicholas: “It was an historic day for The Barnsley Chronicle and for Barnsley as a whole.

“It was an honour to introduce him to the Chronicle and its staff who have helped make it the success it remains today.

“I believe that Prince Charles’ visit demonstrates his support for quality, honest local newspapers that remain at the heart of the communities that they serve.”

As well as the supplement, the paper covered the visit extensively online with videos and picture galleries of the visit.

The Prince also met staff who work for sister companies Script Media, which publishes business to business magazines and runs http://www.wearebarnsley.com, and book publisher Pen and Sword.
