Newly-qualified journalist named top digital publisher

A newly-qualified journalist has been named as digital publisher of the year by a newspaper group.

Emma Glanfield, 23, started work with Northcliffe Media’s South West Media group as a digital publisher to cover maternity leave after finishing a degree in Journalism at Staffordshire University in 2011

Eventually Emma, pictured left, was made a permanent member of staff and now she has been named as the  group’s digital publisher of the year.

She received the prize at a company awards ceremony held last week.

Northcliffe Digital publishing director Marc Cooper said: “Emma finally joined us on a permanent basis as digital publisher for North Devon, after a year of freelancing for ThisisExeter and generally helping out.

“Emma has quickly established herself as a key member of the South West team, kept thisisExeter going strong while covering for another DP on maternity leave during a crucial period when the newspaper went from daily to weekly, and has more recently helped to reengage the North Devon newsroom in digital, rapidly build audience on thisisNorthDevon and go from strength to strength.

“She not only brings in regular cracking stories, but she also blogs football matches at weekends, takes great video, is a natural at social media, and has also turned her hand to data journalism.”

North Devon Journal editor Chloe Hubbard added: “Emma has helped revolutionise the news team at the North Devon Journal with her infectious enthusiasm for breaking news and rich content. We’re all really proud and this award is thoroughly well deserved. A top award for a top journalist.”

Every newsroom should have an Emma. She’s a dynamo.

Pity they couldn’t be bothered to get a decent pic of her. This photo good ( or bad) example of typical citizen journalist effort.

Oh bore off Lensman. Why are people so intent on writing negative comments on HTFP?

Boring fact alert. Lovely girl Emma and very pleased for her. But the NDJ newsroom was breaking news online with video and topic pages around five years ago when it had its own full-time, experienced Digital Editor so this “re-engagement and revolution” quoted by the company’s top execs may be of the smoke n mirrors variety….

Sorry lensman has a point even if a little Bad Santa. Why put in a crap pic with such a positive story? Laziness methinks.
People are seen as negative because they care about improving the sloppy standards of writing and pics spreading like a disease throughout the news industry. Using crap sent-in pictures is now accepted practice in many papers and websites. The worst of them get blown up really big!
