New editor for JP daily-turned-weekly

One of the five Johnston Press-owned daily newspapers which turned weekly earlier this summer has a new editor from today.

John Kenealy, left, takes over as boss of the Halifax Courier from Tim Robinson, who has moved to a group-wide design role.

A father-of-four, John has spent most of his working career at the Courier, where he has successively been sports editor, news editor and deputy editor.

His other former papers include the Wakefield Express and Derby Telegraph

Said John: “It is a great honour to be appointed editor of the Courier. I look forward to maintaining the Courier’s reputation for in-depth coverage of the news in Calderdale and its tradition as a campaigning community newspaper.”

Tim, who had been editor of the paper since November 2010, is to take up the role of group editorial design director with Johnston Press.

He said: “I have met a great many Calderdale people during my time at the Courier and been welcomed here by loads of community groups.

“I would like to thank all of them, as well as our many loyal readers for their help, support and generosity of spirit.”

John will report to Mark Bradley, group editor of Yorkshire Weekly Newspapers and editor of the Wakefield Express, who adds the Courier to his overall portfolio.

Hannah Ridgeway, editor of the Dewsbury Reporter Series, has added the Morley Observer & Advertiser to her group role, and will also be involved in some key initiatives across the West Yorkshire weekly titles.

Group Editorial Design Director??? Does JP actually give a toss about Design then??? *FAINTS!* ‘Cos they certainly don’t give a Monkey’s about content…I’m hard pressed to actually find any news worth reading in some of the titles that they produce. But then again…If you get rid of all those Professional, well-trained, talented, and extremely hard-working Journalists that JP used to employ, and let the Office Cleaner run the paper instead…what do you expect??? :)

Bearing in mind they have announced today that the central design unit at Preston is to close with the loss of around 10 jobs I think it is fair to assume, Hackette, that JP does not actually given a toss about design.
