Journalist’s charity feat in memory of dad

A weekly newspaper reporter is aiming to visit 100 sports grounds in 100 hours to raise funds in memory of his dad.

Adam Lord, a reporter on The Visitor newspaper in Morecambe, Lancashire, will take part in the Groundhop 100 challenge with school friends John Ferguson, David Murphy and James Dick to raise money for St John’s Hospice in Lancaster.

It is a cause very close to Adam’s heart after his dad Simon, died at the end of September, age 54, following a three-year battle with cancer.

Said Adam: “In the final weeks and days of dad’s life the hospice at home team were absolutely fantastic and made dad comfortable and ensured he could stay at home with mum and I.

“I can’t thank them enough and I just want to raise as much money as I can, because if any of the services St John’s offers were to be lost then it would be a travesty.

“I’m no athlete so decided GroundHop 100 was the best way to try and raise some cash. It won’t be easy, we’ll be sleeping in the car and probably out on our feet at the end, but I’d like to think we’ll have some fun along the way.”

The trip, which will take in the 92 Football League grounds as well as other stadiums such as Wembley, Lord’s cricket ground and Twickenham, will coincide with the Football League’s Help the Hospices week , dedicated to their charity of the year.

The group will set off on Tuesday 6 March from Lancaster City’s Giant Axe and are aiming to finish at the Globe Arena in time for Morecambe’s game against Hereford on Saturday 10 March.

The three want to pick up items from the clubs along the way and will auction them on the night to raise more money for the cause.

David Hayton Peugeot in Morecambe will provide them with their car for the 3,000 mile trip.

They will also blog about the challenge at groundhop100.wordpress.com.
