Journalist at Sunday title named best in Scotland

A journalist at the Scottish Sunday title has been named the best print journalist in the country in an awards scheme set up by students at a university.

Iain MacWhirter at the Sunday Herald was named the top Scottish Print Journalist of the Year by journalism students at Edinburgh Napier University, who set up The Napiers to honour those who inspired them into media careers.

The awards, held for the first time this year, were presented on Monday afternoon at a ceremony hosted by Newsnight presenter Kirsty Wark at the university’s Craighouse campus.

They were launched after a series of talks by industry professionals inspired journalists students to run their own Scottish media awards, with the winners being voted for by them.

Also winning awards were Alan Little from the BBC, who won the Scottish Broadcast Journalist of the Year title, and culture and listings magazine The Skinny, which won Scottish Publication of the Year.

An award was also presented to the Edinburgh Napier Alumni of the Year, which was won by BBC Scotland newsreader Cat Shearer.

Fourth-year undergraduate Andy Mackie organised the awards along with fellow students Jenny Kassner and Rachel Watson.

The ceremony was attended by university students and staff, both past and present, along with media professionals from across Scotland.
