Journalism students call for more social media training

Journalism students have called for more training in social media at a meeting with directors of the National Council for the Training of Journalists.

Harriet Brace from Glasgow Caledonian University, Tom Edwards from Lambeth College and Hannah Mark from Belfast Metropolitan College joined the NCTJ bosses at their board meeting last week to share their views about their training and qualifications.

They were nominated to attend the meeting by the NCTJ’s Student Council and discussed topics including the teaching of ethics, exam fees and re-sits, the timing of exams at different centres and shorthand exams.

The students also put forward a number of suggestions including providing more training in social media and showcasing the work of budding journalists on the NCTJ’s website.

Harriet, who is about to finish her course and has already secured a trainee position at the Carrick Gazette, said: “I was really pleased to be selected to attend the NCTJ board meeting.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for students to provide feedback and suggestions direct to the decision-makers, and to do some serious networking!”
