Health secretary praises importance of local newspapers

Health secretary Andrew Lansley has spoken of the importance of local newspapers at an event in the House of Commons this week.

He spoke to 10 political editors and correspondents from regional papers at the Newspaper Conference breakfast briefing, which was chaired by Graeme Demianyk, London editor of the Western Morning News.

Mr Lansley said: “People, if anything, attach more importance, read more carefully, absorb more fully what is in their local and regional newspaper than they do what is in the national newspapers. You’re talking about things that matter to them.”

At the event, the Newspaper Society also raised concerns about proposals by the General Medical Council to allow its Fitness to Practise Panels to sit in private, which were revealed last year.

The GMC is currently working with the Department of Health on a Section 60 order to amend the law so the hearings are no longer public – but the NS said the move could undermine public confidence in the medical profession.

Wonder if Lansley would be so keen on the local press if it did its job properly and backed up the Save Our NHS campaigners?
