Fresh look for West Midlands free weekly

A weekly newspaper in Worcestershire has been re-launched with a new design.

The changes were made to the Newsquest title the Evesham Journal as a way of showing that ‘free newspapers need not be the poor relations of their paid-for stablemates.’

The 27,700-distribution tabloid has been redesigned with new typefaces, clearer signposting, a modular layout that makes better use of pictures, and an expanded page of readers’ letters.

The three-edition paper, which was first published in 1860, also has an editorial leader column for the first time in many years.

The new look Evesham Journal

John Wilson, deputy group editor for Newsquest in the South Midlands, was responsible for the redesign.

Said John: “The Journal is a much-loved local newspaper, but its design had become a little tired over the years.

“We put a lot of thought into how readers and advertisers would want it to look, and believe they will be delighted with its new appearance. We have already received some compliments.

“Although about 20 per cent of its circulation is paid-for, the Journal is largely a free paper, albeit one that would put many paid-for weeklies to shame.”

The Journal is delivered free to readers in Evesham and the nearby town of Pershore, and is sold at 55p per copy in parts of the Cotswolds.

It’s even better than the other freesheet in the area, The Evesham Observer. The Bullivant owned Observer will struggle in the area, especially after they have laid off 4 photographers in the last 8 months. This will only succumb to a defecit in its look, causing advertisers to go towards a higher quality paper such as the Journal.
