Former regional journalist dies at age of 94

A former journalist who met his wife while working in the newsroom of a regional daily has died at the age of 94.

Frank Dixon worked at Staffordshire’s The Sentinel during the 1950s and 1960s, holding many roles during his time there, including court reporter.

He started his career in journalism at the Congleton Chronicle before moving to The Sentinel where he met his future wife Shirley, who was also based in the newsroom.

After the birth of his daughter Elizabeth, Frank became a sub-editor on the Manchester Evening News and the Daily Mirror, spending Saturday nights on the sports desk at the Sunday Express.

He died at his home in Eastbourne last month following a long illness and his funeral has been held at Carmountside Crematorium in Stoke, which was attended by journalists who had worked with him.

At the funeral, poems and eulogies written by family members were read to the congregation and there was a tribute from his grandson George Neale.
