Journalists’ church offers £3k grant to student

The church of St Bride’s Fleet Street is offering a bursary of £3,000 to a journalism student.

St Bride’s – traditionally known as the journalists’ church because of its location -wants to help fund a postgraduate student at City University in London who wishes to pursue a one year MA in newspaper journalism.

The Venerable David Meara, Rector of the Fleet Street church, said:  “The recipient of the St Bride’s Guild bursary will be encouraged to make a link with the church and the Guild.

“They will be offered membership of the Guild for their postgraduate year, and will be invited to visit the church and learn something of its rich history.

“We continue to be the spiritual home for journalists, and to commemorate those who have served the industry or been killed reporting from the trouble spots of the world.

“In the twenty first century the indefinable fellowship of Fleet Street, although widely dispersed, remains solidly linked with St Bride’s.”

The Guild of St Bride consists of over 100 members of the wider church congregation who assist in the worship of the church and in its weekday ministry.

Many members of the Guild have had links with the printing and newspaper industry, and St Bride’s Church has strong historical links with Fleet Street, dating from the time when William Caxton’s apprentice Wynkyn de Worde brought his press to the parish in 1500.

Added David: “We hope that this bursary will be a practical contribution to encouraging a new generation of committed journalists, and will help to keep St Bride’s at the heart of the journalistic community in Britain and throughout the world.”
