Daily proves it is streets ahead with popular campaign

A campaign launched by a Scottish newspaper to spruce up Glasgow is going strong nine months on.

The Evening Times launched its Streets Ahead campaign in May and since then has encouraged a network of people, known as Street Champions, to work to transform the city.

The daily title has partnered with a number of organisations including Glasgow City Council and Glasgow Housing Association for the campaign which aims to make a brighter city one street at a time.

Recent projects that have taken place as part of the scheme include a community garden project called the Pacitti Garden, named after Mario Pacittti who used to run a chip shop in the area for 50 years but died suddenly seven years ago.

Editor Tony Carlin said: “Pacitti Garden is an excellent example of how Streets Ahead can help people improve their local areas.

“By getting everyone together, the residents and businesses behind this project will create something really special – and a lovely tribute to a man who was obviously very popular in Kinning Park.”

Other projects included the transformation of a railway site by creating a community garden, a gardening competition, and an outdoor classroom built by children from a local primary school.

School children have also taken part in litter picks, clean ups and planting sessions.

They also created an adopt-a-street aspect of the campaign in conjunction with local fire services, in which shovels were provides to encourage people to shovel snow off pavements.

Added Tony: “Many others groups across the city are benefiting from the expertise of our partners and financial help from Streets Ahead, but here is always room for more.

“We want to help the people of Glasgow change the city for the better street by street.”
