Axed editor collects newspaper of year prize

Outgoing Scotsman editor John McLellan last night accepted Scotland’s newspaper of the year prize – a week after it was announced his position is being axed.

The Johnston Press owned title scooped the top accolade at last night’s Scottish Press Awards.

John, who was sacked as editor of The Scotsman last week and whose other role as editor-in-chief of Scotsman Publications is disappearing in a restructure, picked up the award on behalf of the newspaper.

However, reports AllMediaScotland, he made no mention of his own situation in a brief acceptance speech.

Former Scotsman editor John McLellan accepts the Newspaper of the Year prize from presenters Dame Elishi Angliolini and Des Clark.

Another departing Scotsman journalist, executive editor Bill Jameson, was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement award.

Bill, who paid tribute to John in his own acceptance speech, announced in January that he was stepping down from the role.

The top individual award of Journalist of the year was won by David Pratt, foreign editor of The Herald/Sunday Herald.

Nice kilt. Henceforth, perhaps all English journalists picking up prizes in Scotland should appear in cricketing flannels or tweedy plus-fours and a deerstalker. If the industry is going down in flames, let’s all go down in style.
