Training bursaries on offer to budding journalists

Wannabe journalists from diverse backgrounds are being given chance to receive financial support to allow them to attend courses accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists.

The Journalism Diversity Fund, which is run by the NCTJ, has now helped 101 students to complete courses and applications are now open for the next set of bursaries, with a deadline of 29 April.

Budding reporters and photojournalists who wish to apply must have been accepted on NCTJ courses which start between September this year and August 2012.

Previous recipients of the fund are now working as trainee reporters at local and national newspapers, with others starting careers in radio and television broadcasting.

The final group of bursaries in 2010 saw seven hopefuls from diverse backgrounds impress the judges with their potential and determination to succeed in the newsroom, who will start courses early this year.
