Regional daily launches war on graffiti

A daily newspaper in Norfolk is going all guns blazing in the fight against graffiti.

The Norwich Evening News has launched Graffitibusters in conjunction with police and and other organisations in the city in a bid to scrub out graffiti for good.

The Archant-owned title is working with the City Centre Safer Neighbourhood Action Panel which has been set up, adopting graffiti as one of its current priorities. The group will spend the next few months dedicating resources to try to catch those responsible.

Worst-affected areas of the city will be in line for a clean-up over the coming weeks as the paper, along with police and their partner agencies look to recruit an army of volunteers to help remove the graffiti.

The Norwich City Centre Partnership has helped kick-start the clean up campaign by donating £500 so paint and other equipment, like overalls, can be purchased by clean up teams.

In March it was reported that it took less than an hour for a Norwich Evening News investigation to find 35 locations spoiled by graffiti around the city.

A clean up day will be held on June 15.  Reporter Peter Walsh, said: “On the day of the  clean-up we will be sending a reporter and looking to do what we can. I’m sure they will be donning a suit and getting involved.”

Anyone caught committing an offence is given an £80 on-the-spot fine or arrested and given a criminal record.

The city council removes graffiti from council property and public areas but cannot clean up privately-owned buildings.

    Jeez.

Is there no indignity which the newsroom’s Poor Bloody Infantry will not be forced to suffer?

Cleaning up the tedious scrawl of the street now is it?

    Where will it end?
