Publisher backs new multimedia journalism course

A regional publisher has lent its backing to a new multimedia journalism course which has been launched by a university.

MEN Media has welcomed the creation of Manchester Metropolitan University’s Multimedia Journalism postgraduate course, which will welcome its first students in September.

It can be undertaken over one or two years and leads to a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or a Masters.

The course will be run by the university’s Department of Information and Communications and aims to equip budding journalists with the wide range of skills needed in today’s newsrooms.

Eamonn O’Neal, managing editor at MEN Media, said: “This is an exciting new course with dedicated staff with significant industry experience and contacts.

“MMU is highly regarded by the multimedia industry in Manchester and beyond, so students will benefit from access to placements and exciting job opportunities.”

Students on the course will be able to use the university’s mock newsroom for training in front of and behind the camera, while they will also learn media law and public affair and produce a portfolio of print and digital work.

Mandy Leigh, a former editor who is a media consultant to MMU, said: “Today’s journalist needs to be able to do everything from newsgathering and photography, to video and writing for the web.

“This MMU course covers everything because that is what the modern job demands.”

Given the number of bodies thrown overboard at MEN in the last five years, graduates of this course need not trouble to send in a CV. Unless they are accomplished at writing advertorials, that is.
