Photo exhibition marks NCTJ’s 60th anniversary

An exhibition which celebrates the best press photography over the years will be launched as part of celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the National Council for the Training of Journalists.

The organisation’s exhibition will start in June to showcase the work of NCTJ-trained photographers working across the regional, national and international press.

Featured in the display will be the work of those ranging from recent graduates to professionals with many years of experience.

Images which will appear in the exhibition have been chosen by the NCTJ’s photography board after inviting snappers to submit pictures last year.

The Guardian has donated the space for the exhibition which is being held at its headquarters in York Way, London, and will be launched with an invitation-only event on 10 June, before being open to the public from 11 June to 15 July.

Also supporting the event is Photobox, which is contributing the printing and mounting of the pictures.

Some may think this comment ironic, given my nom de plume, but why do HTFP insist on referring to photographers as ‘snappers’? We don’t read stories about reporters, where they are referred to as hacks.

I used to work with a snapper who insisted he ‘painted with light’ while I merely filled in the spaces between pics with ‘a few chucked in words’. His pictures were crap. He was given the bullet and now ‘paints with light’ as a wedding photographer.

Northern Snapper – I did a quick search earlier and counted upwards of 50 stories on HTFP with the word ‘hack’ or ‘hacks’ in the headline!

OK HTFP editor – I guess I’m guilty of only reading the stories with ‘snapper’ in the headline. Please, in future articles, will you refer to hacks as ‘caption writers’ also?

Oh and I’ve just done a quick search myself and found over 430 references to ‘snapper’ or ‘snappers’ on HTFP. Some disparity there, me thinks!
