Nine sub editors at Scottish title are axed

Nine sub editors from the Scottish Daily Record will are to be issued with redundancy notices today and another six will be given an extra month to try to save their jobs.

The news, which was announced on Twitter by the Scottish branch of the National Union of Journalists, comes after further talks were held between the union and senior management yesterday.

Last month it was announced that 90 journalism posts were facing redundancy at the two titles, although this was later reduced to 71 following discussions with the union.

Since then 45 journalists have already accepted voluntary redundancy, meaning a further 26 compulsory redundancies are expected.

The six sub-editors who have won a stay of execution are thought to be members of the Sunday Mail team whose redundancies have been deferred because sales have picked up following the closure of the News of the World.

All remaining journalists from Trinity Mirror titles the Record and Sunday Mail  are due to receive letters from management shortly explaining whether they will remain at the newspaper or not.

The union had asked the company to halt all compulsory redundancies for six months but they refused.

A Facebook group joined by more than 300 people has also been set up in an attempt to salvage jobs at the papers.

Trinity Mirror has so far not responded to requests for a comment.
