New office will bring reporters closer to community

Archant Suffolk has opened a new newspaper office to bring reporters closer to the community.

Four reporters will be based at the new premises for the East Anglian Daily Times and its sister papers at the Framlingham Technology Centre on Station Road in Suffolk.

Reporters have been moved from outer offices such as Ipswich which is a 45 minute drive away.

Editor Terry Hunt said the move was to bring reporters as close as possible to the readers.

Said Terry: “It is important that the team covering rural east Suffolk and the market towns in that area is based as close as possible to those communities.”

Terry also spoke at a launch event for the new offices in which he said that the opening of the new office was an important part of the newspaper’s commitment to the community which it serves.

The launch party was also attended by Johnny Hustler, managing director of Archant Anglia, which publishes the EADT.

Moving community papers into their communities?
Are we looking at the future?

I’m confused. Woodbridge is perhaps a 15-minute drive from Ipswich, Framlingham 35 mins or so. And you would not describe Ipswich as an “outer office” of the EADT. It’s the head office. Where is this new office?

When I worked on the EADT it had a network of local offices in, to name but two East Suffolk towns, Woodbridge and Leiston, which actually were ‘closer to the community’, and of course they were all closed down to maximise profits, so all this is doing is turning the clock back to some way short of where it was 20 years ago. And describing Ipswich as an ‘outer office’ is just laughable. Don’t you have any subs? Does HTFP not realise that by accepting this management cant at face value, it undermines its own reputation? “Archant Suffolk has opened a new office to bring reporters closer to the community” sounds like it’s asserting a fact, when in reality Parvenu’s comment indicates clearly that Archant is talking through its hat. As a sub, I wouldn’t let an intro like that slip through without deleting ‘to’ before ‘bring’ and adding the words ‘it says will’, otherwise you’re just complicit in Archant’s propagandising, and showing your own ignorance, to boot.
