Teesside Evening Gazette editor Darren Thwaites is to be the new editor of the Evening Chronicle in Newcastle, publisher Trinity Mirror announced today.
Darren, who has been editor in Teesside since August 2005, will begin his new role at the beginning of September.
He takes over from Paul Robertson, who announced his surprise resignation last month after 22 years with the company. Paul is due to finish work tomorrow.
Darren has previously worked as editorial development manager for Trinity Mirror Regionals, deputy editor of the Aberdeen Evening Express and associate editor of the Daily Post Wales.
Neil Benson, editorial director of Trinity Mirror Regionals and himself a former Chronicle editor said: “I am delighted that Darren will be leading the Chronicle through the next phase of its development.
“He has an outstanding mix of editorial skills, spanning print and digital. He has done a superb job at the Evening Gazette and I’m sure the Chronicle will go from strength to strength under his leadership.”
Added Darren: “The Chronicle is an iconic brand in a great city and I’m delighted to have been given such an exciting opportunity.
“At the same time, I’ll be sad to leave Teesside after six thoroughly enjoyable years. I’d like to thank my team for their support and for the high standards they continue to set.”
Paul was editor of the Chronicle for eight years and also held the title of editorial director of Trinity Mirror North-East. He made the decision to move on having recently overseen the Chronicle’s move to early-morning publication.
Trinity Mirror has now begun the recruitment process for a new editor of the Evening Gazette.
